Rubin “Hurricane” Carter, sfidante al titolo mondiale dei pesi medi e pugile dal micidiale gancio sinistro, icona nera che ispirò canzoni e film, è scomparso nella sua casa di Toronto, a 76 anni [...] Incolpato ingiustamente di aver ucciso due uomini e una donna (tutti bianchi) in New Jersey nel 1966, trascorse oltre 19 anni in carcere, prima di essere dichiarato innocente con due distinte sentenze che dimostrarono la sua totale estraneità. All’epoca, a favore della sua causa si mobilitarono in tanti, politici, organizzazioni a favore dei diritti civili come “Amnesty International”, campioni dello sport e star del cinema e della musica. Per anni il suo nome divenne il simbolo di una cattiva giustizia di stampo razzista: il suo fu infatti un caso di discriminazione legata al colore della pelle . Basandosi sulla sua storia, Bob Dylan, compose la celebre canzone intitolata appunto con il suo soprannome, “Hurricane”, che divenne un successo internazionale nel 1976. Molti anni più tardi, anche Hollywood si occupò della sua triste vicenda: nel 1999 uscì un film di Norman Jewison, basato sull’autobiografia dell’ex pugile «The 16yh Round», dal titolo anche questa volta “The Hurricane”, interpretato da Denzel Washington, che per la sua performance ricevette una nomination agli Oscar.
